Why install solar?

More than two million households across the country have installed solar already.1 There are initial start-up and set-up costs of a home solar power system, but this upfront expenditure is usually considered an investment, as there are many ongoing benefits for homeowners that make up for the initial cost.

  • As you create your own energy, you use less from the grid which should lead to savings on your power bills
  • If your panels generate more electricity than your household requires, the excess electricity can be sold back to the grid (depending on schemes in different States or Territories).2
  • Solar panels can be a real estate selling point and potentially add market value to your home.

What is the average breakdown of energy costs?3

On average, households spend these percentages on each category

2 Clean Energy Regulator - Small scale renewable energy scheme – 7 Oct 2014

How does solar work?

Solar electricity panels capture the sun's energy and convert it into electricity that is used in the home to power appliances. The panels, comprised of photovoltaic (PV) cells, are usually mounted on the roof and positioned to maximise their exposure to the sun's light. When the sunlight hits them, they generate electricity. An inverter is used to convert the energy into AC electricity that you can use in your home, reducing the amount of electricity that you draw from the grid.
